25 people injured the Devaragattu fete

devaragattu-feteAt least 25 people were injured, two of them seriously, as hundreds of people clashed with sticks during the annual fete on the night of Dasara at Devaragattu in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Despite heavy police bandobust and constant vigil by the district administration, people went on with ferocity and several people were found bleeding at the temple.
The fete, said to be an age-old tradition, is being celebrated ‘to claim the statues of Mala Malleswara Swamy, the presiding deities’ there. People belonging to 11 villages are divided into two groups and clash with strong sticks. In the process, they suffer severe injuries, mostly to their heads. Last year, two people have succumbed to the injuries.
