30-years on, Swati Muthyam still gets cine critics’ applause

Each and every movie that the legendary director K Viswanath directed was a classic and many of them have done well at the box office. One such movie was Swathi Muthyam, which completes 30 years today. It was exactly on this day in 1986, the film was released. Poornodaya Movie Creations, which produced many a classic film, has produced this one as well. The Kamal Hassan, Radhika-starrer was the first Telugu movie nominated for Oscar under best regional film category. Dr C Narayana Reddy, Sirivennela Sastry and Atreya have penned lyrics and mellifluous scores by maestro Illayaraja have made this film evergreen. It won several awards including best actor and director categories. Kamal, who portrayed the role of an autistic boy and Radhika’s balanced and matured action- both as a young widow and later as wife of a metally ill person-have captivated the audience. Especially the greatest twist in the movie was Sivayya (Kamal) whisking away the divine mangal sutra when the Sitarama Kalyanam is going on and tying the knot to Lalitha (Radhika) in an attempt to do good to her. Legendary actress Nirmala’s portrayal as the grandmother of SIvayya and Sarath Babu’s role as the brother of Radhika were well received. Handling of such a critical subject is very difficult but Viswanath with his awesome directorial skill performed the task in a perfect manner, said noted critic S Madhusudana Rao.
