640 Fishermen in Danger as 40 Trawlers Missing in Bay of Bengal

fishKolkata: 2 trawlers carrying 32 people sank nearly 200 kilometers off the Diamond Harbor near Kolkata. The rescue-men saved 25 while other 7 are still missing. A threat carried to the lives of other 640 fishermen as 40 trawlers went missing in Bay of Bengal.

The chief of Fishermen’s Welfare Association, Bijan Maity told AFP, “We have been trying to contact the trawlers. All our efforts were in vain because of the inclement weather and storm.”

“The Coast Guard has been alerted and the efforts are on to trace the missing trawlers,” said the Sunderban Development Minister Manturam Pakhira. Another official informed that the Coast Guard is searching for the trawlers using a boat and an aircraft as they received the calls from the association about the fishermen. In the interim, the fishermen being rescued are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
