An Assocham and Deloitte study on “Digitisation and Mobility in India” has revealed that the country is set to register 9 billion app downloads as early as next year! India is set to become the second biggest internet using society, overtaking US within 2014, the same study revealed.
App downloads in 2012 have clocked at 1.56 billion per annum and at a growth rate of 75% per year, the figure is set to touch 9 billion by next year. The growth is despite the fact that India’s internet speed stands at 118 in the the global list, the slowest in Asia pacific region too! The compound annual growth rate has been zooming ahead mostly because of growth through internet usage in mobile telephony, usage of YouTube, and also due to the recent general elections using the social media in an unprecedented manner.
While 60 million tweets were made during the election season, 29 million users made 227 million interactions about the elections during the same season.
Mobile phones and video viewing too has played a part in this connected India revolution. Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat stated, “Mobile TV registered a 400 percent growth rate in viewership for the country’s largest telecom companies as more Indians watched TV on the go. YouTube, the most popular video app is accessed by 35 percent of smartphone users who spend almost 1.5 hours a month on it.”
One area of concern for gaming and app developers has been developing them in small sizes for the cost sensitive Indian society. Most companies are presently focusing in this issue and developing smaller, lighter versions.
