98 ‘smart cities’, says Naidu

smartcity-listMinister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu announced 98 cities and towns selected for development as smart cities. They were nominated by States and UTs at the end of first stage of ‘City Challenge’ competition in which all urban local bodies were evaluated based on financial and institutional capacities. He said 98 cities have a population of about 13 crore. Funds may be released to 20 cities this year and others will be asked to improve the identified deficiencies before participating in the next round of competition. Cities to be selected in the second stage would be provided with Central assistance of Rs 200 crore in the first year followed by Rs 100 crore during three years, he said.
