Production of Aadhar card was a must for obtaining right from pension to opening a bank account or getting a new sim card. But it is a thing of the past. The Central Government made it clear now that Aadhar card was not compulsory for availing citizen services or social welfare measures. The Centre also banned the demand of aadhar card by educational institutions for admission. Though the Supreme Court ruled earlier that it was not possible to link the government services with aadhar card, many states still demand it for providing government services. Hence the Union Government in consultation with the Attorney General issued clear instructions that aadhar was not compulsory.
However, it clarified that the state government might issue an aadhar card on request by the public. But aadhar may be used for Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yogana, cash transfer for gas etc.
