The staple indian drink of British legacy, ubiquitous chai has been in news and political schemes of all parties for the first time in Indian political history. Courtesy Narendra Modi and his modest beginnings as a chai walaa early in his life, BJP is going all the way to collect the working class, aam aadmi votes across the country. As several leaders from Congress and other parties have passed comments on ”Chai wala Modi”‘ and his administrative capabilities for this vast country in this modern age. Even Chidambaram chose to take jibes at Modi during his Vote on Account budget presentation. BJP went on an overdrive and designed a country level campaign to highlight chai dukaan gathering and discussion of serious issues with “Chai Pe Charcha” program.
On the other side, RJD Chief Lalu has been saying that only he can be the rightful claimant to the title of a Chai Wala. He pointed out his own chai seller stage of life and started his own chai dukaans in Bihar. Rival Congress has started ”free milk distribution” program in some areas of the country, saying Chai is not conducive to health, whereas milk has always been looked at as health sustainer.
Suddenly Lalu Prasad Yadav has come up with a new way to attract attention! Yesterday, he went to Raj Bhavan riding a Cycle Rickshaw and openly declared that it was part of his modest growth story! “Do you know why I rode a cycle-rickshaw to Raj Bhawan today? Because I paddled a cycle-rickshaw while studying in Miller school,” Lalu said. As he had successfully rebuffed the attempts to splinter his party yesterday, his new PR gimmickry too grabbed good media and public attention.
Will we be seeing more political rickshaw pullers across the country now?
