After IIT panel proposes three-fold hike, Smriti assures fee waiver for dalits

Smriti-assures-fee-waiver-fIn a clear attempt to placate the dalit community, the Union HRD minister Smriti Zubin Irani has assured that all SCs and STs will be provided free education at the IITs across the country. “No tuition fee for SCs, STs and PH students at IITs” she told media at Surat.
She has also stated that there will be 66% of concession in fee for those students whose family’s annual income is less than Rs 5 lakh.
Presently, there is no tuition fee for the SCs and ST students but they need to pay up some establishement charges besides hostel and mess charges.
Her announcement has come months after a top IIT panel proposed a three-fold hike in fee- i.e. from Rs 90,000 p.a. to Rs 3 lakh- for UG courses. The minister did not comment on the hike proposal which is still awaiting decision of HRD.
The minister’s assurances are clearly aimed at winning back the dalits who have been angry following the incidents at HCU and JNU. As this is the 125th year of birth anniversary
The move will be extended to all 33 NITs across the country along with some other premiere tech institutes. It will benefit 50% of 60, 571 students, the minister said.
At present, the 23 branches of IITs in the country have 15%, 7.5% and 27% of seats reserved for SC, ST and OBC candidates.
