Age-old secrets to stay cool this summer

Untitled-1In India, the country of Ayurveda, we don’t really have to search far for natural ingredients that cool our body. These easily available ingredients are not only mentioned in the ancient science as those that remove heat from the body, but have also been religiously propagated and passed on from generation to generation by our elders.
Add a few methi seeds to curd and quickly swallow it to treat an irritant tummy. Yoghurt helps in not just cooling your body, but also helps in passing on the pro-biotic qualities to the body.
A thin lassi with lots of water is just the right medicine to cool your body and rehydrate it. You can either add sugar / salt or both if you feel too tired after excessive sweating in order to replenish the body salts; and sugar will help energise you.
Water melon, which is thankfully available in abundance during summer, is instant energiser and coolant. Have it in the form of juice or tuck into nicely cut cubes. You can also try the cut pieces of watermelon with a bit of salt and pepper sprinkled on the top. Did you know that watermelon has 91% water?
Coconut water is manna of good qualities. It contains minerals, vitamins and also electrolytes, and can prevent heat related ailments if had regularly during summer.
Herbs like mint, cilantro, citrus fruits like lime and lemon can be used to create innovative juices and drinks that are extremely good for your body. Mint can be used as a chutney, dip or while making raitha etc.
Green leafy vegetables are difficult to get in summer, but are very good for cooling the body, nevertheless.
Raw mango can be made either into aam panna (Raw mango boiled in water, strained and seasoned with rock salt) or used in numerous recipes. It protects the body from heat stroke.
If you wish to eat meat, go for lamb meat instead of chicken. The latter is bane during summers.
Try opting for moong dal on a few occasions instead of the toor dal in your daily menu.
The Telangana special ‘Pachi Pulusu’ is a coolant, its main ingredient tamarind is also considered a remedy for bodily heat.
Onion is also said to be very good for the body, and evidently this is the reason it is extensively used in Indian recipes.
Do not forget the cucumbers; rich in water and vitamins.
