Nearly 300 border schools have been closed in Jammu and Kashmir as a precautionary measure. A high-level meeting under the chairmanship of Union Home minister Rajnath Singh discussed developments in the state today particularly in the aftermath of burning down of 28 schools by separatists. Two school kids have also died.
“84 border schools closed in Balakot zone in Poonch district; 174 schools were shut in Jammu region and another 45 schools were closed in Samba sector” according to the district collectors and senior officials. The threat of burning of schools is very much there and hence the decision, said Mr Haroon Malik, collector of Poonch. The situation is turning worse and in fact, parents are not sending their wards to schools so we decided to declare holiday until further orders, according to Sheetal Nanda, Deputy Commissioner of Samba.
The high-level meeting was attended by Manohar Parikar, defense minister and Ajit Doval, NSA
Expressing concern over burning of schools by miscreants in the Kashmir Valley, Jammu & Kashmir High Court took suo-moto cognizance of the matter. It directed the Chief Secretary , DG Police and Director School Education, to issue necessary instructions to all Deputy Commissioners, SSPs and CEOs of the concerned districts to take all preventive and protective measures for saving the school buildings from being burnt by mysterious enemies of education.
The burning of schools raises question if this is an attempt to replace books with stones. Mainstream political parties have condemned the burning of schools. Police, though knew that separatists have been clandestinely organizing burning of the schools fail to establish and arrest the culprits.
