All Indians are ‘Hindi’, not ‘Hindu’, clarifies Najma Heptullah

All-Indians-are-'Hindi',-noNajma Heptullah, Union Minister for Minority Affairs, has recalled that she used the word ‘Hindi’ for all Indians to be called and the media has misquoted her saying ‘Hindu’.

Yesterday, a media report quoted Ms Heptullah saying that “there is nothing wrong with the term Hindu being applied equally for all citizens as a label of national identity”.

Najma told reporters today at her residence, “We are Indians, that’s our nationality. I used the word Hindi. It’s an Arabic word. They call all Indians Hindi. I didn’t say Hindu. I used the word Hindi”.

She also recalled that she said that people who go to the Arabic countries from India are known as Hindi. “If they go to Iran they are known as Hindustani. That is our nationality and identity… The word is ‘Hindi’,” she asserted.
