Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu have more elders, says a report

eldersAlmost 1.5 Crore senior citizens of India lives all alone, says a report based on 2011 Census.

The report further says that almost three-fourth of them are women.

Tamil Nadu tops in the state in ‘single elders’ where one in every 11 above 60 years is living alone. The report further adds that one in seven elderly people lives in a household where there is nobody below 60 years.

31.3% of the about 25 Crore Indian households have an elder person. In almost 70% households, none is above 60 years.

32.5% households in rural India and 29% households in urban India have an elder person.

Jammu and Kashmir has the lowest proportion, 5.8%, of elderly living in all-elderly households followed by Assam and Haryana with 6.5% and 8.7%.

Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have the highest proportion of elderly living in households comprising only those over 60 years.
