Attempt to suicide would no more be a crime in India

kiren_rijiju_360x270According to the Section 309 of Indian Penal Code, anyone attempting to commit suicide is liable for a year’s term in jail along with a fine but what Modi govt plans is on the other tune. Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju made an statement in Lok Sabha that the Law Commission of India in its 210 report on “Humanization and Decriminalization of Attempt to Suicide” has suggested that Section 309 of IPC needs to be obliterated from the law book.

The Home Ministry is considering the recommendation valid and is in the process of removing Section 309 of the IPC along with some other amendments in IPC and CrPC.

The Law Commission stated in the report that the Section 309 is inhuman; constitutional or unconstitutional is a different matter. The removal of code would save many lives and ease the distressed of his suffering, it said.
