Bail for HCU students

hcuA court in Hyderabad was on Monday granted bail to 28 students and two faculty members of Hyderabad Central University. The police has not opposed the bail.

A lawyer said the government had decided not to oppose the bail, creating hopes that the students get early bail.

The students and faculty members were arrested on March 22 during a police crackdown on those protesting the return of P. Appa Rao as the vice chancellor after a two-month leave. The parents of the arrested students were angry at the attitude of both the varsity administration and the state government and questioned why their wards were beaten, dragged and booked cases in different police stations.

A section of students want the sacking and arrest of Appa Rao, holding him responsible for the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula.
