Beedi workers agitate

BEEDIThe beedi workers of Telangana are up in arms against the latest GO 727-E by the Central government which makes it mandatory to display the picture of a skull and two bones, 85 percent of the size of the beedi rolls. The GO also makes it compulsory to print the manufacturing and expiry dates on the beedi rolls. The beedi workers say that mini cigarettes have already sabotaged the beedi market and  this GO will further bring down the sale of the beedis. About 400 beedi making units in Telangana have been closed from February 15 and the beedi workers in the state are on the war path against the Central GO. There are about two crores beedi workers in the country and eight lakhs of them in Telangana, all of them being daily wage labourers.
