BJP faced a major setback after virtually sweeping Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in the general election four months back. BJP only managed to win 2 out of 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh by-polls while Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party won 8 seats.
11. The only Lok Sabha seat in the state that went for poll after Mulayam Singh Yadav’s resignation is also won by the Samajwadi Party. Mulayam Singh’s grand-nephew Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, 26, made his entry to the Lok Sabha with Mainpuri Lok Sabha.
In Rajasthan, the Congress won the three out of four assembly seats that polled. All the four seats were earlier held by BJP but it only managed to win Kota South in the by-polls.
In Narendra Modi’s Gujarat, BJP won Vadodra Lok Sabha seat that went to poll after Narendra Modi vacated the seat to retain Varanasi. Congress anyhow bagged three of the nine assembly seats in Gujarat. All the nine were previously held by BJP.
