The Andhra Pradesh government has approached the Supreme Court over the conducting of municipal polls in the present circumstances. The government has said that it cannot conduct the polls now as the general elections will have to be held around the same time. The prospects of changing reservations under the backdrop of state division also renders the holding of elections against the law, the government has said. The elections will have to be conducted again which makes the present exercise useless, the government pleaded.
The Supreme Court has took strong objections over delaying the local governance elections for more than three years. The application is postponed to day after tomorrow for further hearings.
The municipal polls now face the prospect of being conducted, based on SC decision, yet the results may not get declared. The general elections code which will be under enforcement by that time, will be an impediment. There are prospects of more cases on the issue as well.
