Centre’s Pongal Gift to T. Nadu

jallikattuThe Centre allowed the controversial Jallikattu (Taming of the bull) in Tamilnadu, a pongal gift from the Centre. Jallikattu was banned by the Supreme Court in 2014 as animal rights activists agitated against this ‘inhuman sport.’ But now, as the Tamilnadu chief minister Ms. Jayalalithaa appealed to the Centre to allow Jallikattu as it was a traditional sport of the state during Pongal, the Environmental Ministry allowed it with a new set of protective rules. The new rules exempt Jallikattu and bullock cart racing from ban on exhibition of lion, tiger, bear etc.. The Tamil public in Madurai celebrate this news with bursting of crackers, singing and dancing on the streets. The ruling and the opposition parties thanked the Centre for its ‘Pongal gift.’
