A US Federal Judge has ruled yesterday that Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade did have diplomatic immunity at the time of her trial. The court further accepted the request of the diplomat’s lawyer to dismiss all the charges. A fresh indictment is not ruled out by the court or the US Attorney.
Devyani Khobragade has been asked to leave US after a diplomatic heated environment between the countries looked to further escalate. Khobragade is presently placed with Delhi Foreign Affairs, away her from her husband and two kids who are still in US.
Devyani was arrested in December, was subjected to strip search and was put with criminals during her arraignment. India reacted strongly to her mistreatment, diplomatic immunity, special treatment to US embassy officials was withdrawn. After Devyani’s return too, India asked US to withdraw a similarly ranked official from Delhi US embassy.
Though the issue is yet to die down, India can be attributed to scoring a moral victory for the time being.
