Clerical job to Rohit Vemula’s brother kicks up a row

rajuA row has erupted after the Delhi government extended a grade IV job to Rohiht Vemula’s brother, Raja Vemula – who is a Masters degree holder in applied geology.

Soon after the death of his brother, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that his  government is ready to offer a group C or D job to Raja Vemula  on compassion grounds.

While the government sees it as extension of goodwill, students and teachers in Hyderabad Central University (HCU) finds it humiliating and insulting.

“The dalit discrimination still continues.. Raja Vemula deserves a better job. Will Mr Kejriwal do the same if Rohit belonged to forward community?” a student of HCU asked.

According to students, Mr Raja scored 72.8%  marks in his Masters degree in Applied Geology from Pondicherry University and  has cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET). This qualifies him to get a job of assistant professor in any national University.

The candidate has been given relaxation from normal procedure of selection and relaxation of skill test qualifications,” the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s letter sent on April 4 says. It is a temporary post.

Raja appreciated the gesture and thanked Delhi government. However, he is yet to accept the offer.
