Membership drive by the State Congress leadership has not come upto the expectations of the high command as they could not register not even 10 lakh members as against a target of 15 lakhs fixed by the Delhi leaders.
Six months passed but the State level leaders drew blank. They are moving earth and heaven as they promised that they would reach 25 lakh figure. It is understood that they were now getting ready for a pack-up.
With the poor show the top leaders descended from Delhi and got ready to tour districts. AICC secretary Kunthia planned to tour Rangareddy, Mahaboobnagar and Khammam districts on April 27 and 28. State party affairs in-charge Digvijay Singh is expected to come on April 29, to review the situation of membership drive.
In the beginning Congress men began on an enthusiastic note but the offer of Rs 2 lakhs insurance for membership by TRS, TDP and BJP, dampened their spirits and efforts.
Former pcc chief Ponnala began discussions with the insurance companies and left it midway. And current pcc head Uttamkumar Reddy neglected it. As a result next line leadership gave up the idea which had hit their drive.
State party opined that the rationale behind the failure was that the high command had postponed the last date for the said drive. In any case state leaders are expected to complete the drive by April 30.and dispatch the membership books by May 15.
