The Congress has announced to support the Judicial Appointments Amendment Bill to be moved by the government in the Lok Sabha today, but it asked for change in the provision that gives veto power to the ruling party.
The Lok Sabha will vote for the Bill today. Expectations are there for a smooth passage of the bill from Lok Sabha. The voting comes after the Narendra Modi government, which is keen to scrap the existing collegium system, on Monday introduced a Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha to establish a six-member body for appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and the High Courts.
Though it looks to pass the lower house of the parliament, it may not be easy for the government to deal with it at the upper house as the dominant Congress is demanding for discussion on the increasing communal violence inn the country. Their demand to debate was rejected by the speaker, which made the opposition to protest and shout slogans in the well of Lok Sabha.
