The condition of Cotton farmers in Telangana is highly deplorable as the rain deceived them this year too. Though overall national production of cotton this year is likely to see an all-time-high, the farmers in Telangana face distress due to high input costs and low remunerative prices.
50% of the cultivated area in Warangal grows cotton; still erratic rainfall did not even let farmers getting the Minimum Support Price. Mallikarjun, a 35-year-old cotton farmer committed suicide. His wife Padma says, “Last three years, cotton crop failed and yet we grew cotton because only that gives hope that we can repay debts, if it is a good crop and we get a good price. Both did not happen”.
The statistics reveal that out of the total suicides by farmers, the number is extensively high of those who grow cotton.
