‘Council reforms must’

unnamed (4)Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need to complete the long-pending task of reforms within a fixed time frame of the UN Security Council to preserve the UNO. Success of UN peacekeeping
depends on the moral force that decisions of the Security Council command, he said and paid homage to the peacekeepers who have laid
down their lives in defending the UN. Peacekeeping missions should be
deployed prudently to support political solutions.  He thanked UN
Secretary General Ban Ki Moon for his prompt report on the panel’s
recommendations. India’s commitment to UN Peacekeeping remains strong
and will grow, Modi said. He also thanked President Obama for hosting
the summit on peacekeeping. It is timely because the security
environment is changing and the demands on peacekeeping are growing as
the resources are harder to find, he said.
