BCCI Chief N Srinivasan was elected ICC chief just a day ago. Today his son in law Gurunath Meiyappan, the Chennai Super Kings’ official, has been indicted by the Mukul Mudgal Committee as having participated in betting. No sentence is pronounced as yet.
“The role of Gurunath Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the team official stands proved and the allegations of betting and passing of information against Meiyappan stand proved,” a report of the three-member committee appointed by the Supreme Court on the issue headed by former Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal said. The committee included Additional Solicitor General N Nagehswar Rao and Assam Cricket Association member Nilay Dutta also. The committee recommended further investigations into allegations of Meiyappan’s involvement with match fixing.
A the player auctions for this new season of IPL are to happen in just two days, the indictment sure would raise a lot of muck. in fact, Lalit Modi, the banned chief of IPL, has already started demanding the ouster of CSK team and every person connected with India Cements, including N Srinivasan from all cricketing bodies.
If CSK is annulled from IPL, all the records will be removed, the team prize money will also be taken back. But more than all this, the ICC chief being debarred from his posts will really damage the image of India for many years to come.
Similar complaints on Rajasthan Royals team owner Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty, would require additional probing, the committee felt.
