C’wealth games scam: Jail for 7

CWGThe CBI court has delivered its verdict in the Common Wealth games – 2010 scam slamming jail sentence to seven accused – four Delhi Municipal Corporation officers and three private directors. Sweka power tech private limited director J P Singh, MD T P Singh were slapped six-year jail term by Special judge Brijesh Garg. Municipal corporation officers D K Sugan, O P Mahala, accountant Raju, tender clerk Gurucharan Singh were sentenced to four years imprisonment. Former minister Kalmadi along with other main accused were yet to be sentenced which is the interesting aspect of the entire case.Enquiry into the case went on for five years. There were charges that nearly Rs 70,000 crore public funds were misused in the conduct of the games and the then prime minister Manmohan Singh handed over the case to CBI for investigation. Tenders were called for 101 km road construction, street lights upgrading and Central Vigilance Commission and CBI jointly found irregularities to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore in the first phase. India had a chance to conduct the popular games in which thousands of sportsmen take part but it left a black mark on UPA government.
