India has taken strong objections to the re indictment of Senior Indian Diplomat Devyani Khobragade by a US Grand Jury today. Calling the continuing pursuance of the case ‘unnecessary,’ Indian officials have issued a statement criticizing the US move.
“Any major consequent to this decision will “unfortunately” impact on efforts to strengthen Indo-US ties”, read a statement released by India. “We reiterate there is no merit in the case and govt will no longer engage in this case in the US legal system” said the statement.
Devyani’s father, retired public servant Uttam Khobragade too took strong objection to the latest US decision. “This was not done by court, it has been initiated by the prosecutor. This is a clear attack against the sovereignty of India. This shows that the US doesn’t even respect their own court rules and are flouting it brazenly. Devyani’s attorney Daniel Arschack had earlier cautioned that if the United States initiates any new indictment it would be viewed as unnecessarily aggressive,” Uttam Khobragade said.
The US foreign ministry is yet to respond on the issue.
