Dipa Karmakar, India’s gymnastic sensation has created waves not just by her performance in Rio but in her home state. Her decision to return the BMW given by Sachin Tendulkar-Chamundeswar Nath on the ground that Tripura has no narrow and poor maintenance of roads and a BMW cannot run has hit the headlines. The Tripura government has officially disagreed with her view, although the ground reality is different.
The government has now decided to repair and widen a road near the residence of the Olympian.
“The road near Dipa’s house falls among some others that we have selected for renovation. Work is expected to begin next month,” public works department chief engineer (roads and buildings) Somesh Chandra Das told media.
Dipa’s family said last week that they would return the luxury car and accept its value from the organisers of the event to buy a vehicle that is locally available. The family has also cited that there is no BMW service centre in Agartala.
