Disney India has announced the production of a two part Maha Bhaarat for the big screens under the direction of Kai Po Che Abhishek Kapoor. It will be a big scale film, the level Indian cinema has not seen, the studio officials said. The film will be written by Ashok Banker, the retelling expert of Indian mythologies.
Disney India MD Siddharth Roy Kapoor while announcing the project has said “At the heart of everything we do at Disney is the aim of telling great stories and creating memorable experiences that transcend generations.” Director Abhishek said, “The Mahabharata expresses the universal truth; it has defined my understanding of spirituality and of all humanity. I aim to translate this onto the big screen, engage minds and deliver a world-class cinematic experience, this will be my Lord of the Rings.”
writer Ashok Banker opined that “It’s an epic as relevant and powerful today as it was millennia ago. Our attempt is to make the Mahabharata that brings alive the great human drama, the terrible conflict, and unforgettable characters, in a way you’ve never seen or thought of them before.”
As a TV serial, and also as a Peter Brooks nine hour stage play, Mahabharat has been a huge success in many resurrections. Spiderman creator Grant Morrison has also created a YouTube web series 18 days based on the Indian epic.
The new film will start pre production after Kapoor’s present film Fitoor is over. It goes unsaid that Vidya Balan is sure to play a lead role, but who would be the male leads?
