Cinematographer, filmmaker Rajiv Menon, well known for his “Minsara Kanavu” “Merupu Kalalu”, has announced the making of a biopic of revered Carnatic musician MS Subbulakshmi. The film was slated to be produced by Dr. MP Somaprasad.
Vidya Balan was chosen to play the legendary singer, who was admired by even Mahatma Gandhi! The Bharata Ratna, Magsaysay award winner’s life would be a fascinating film as it spans traditional music, film world, acting, Indian independence struggle, early years of Independence, MS’s later years. Rajiv Menon’s script is praised by Balan as a great achievement. But the film has been troubled even before the start. First, the Hindu Makkal Katchi has opposed the casting of Vidya as her “Dirty” act would sully the image of the pious MS. Later the producer has gone to court as the final plans of the director did not involve him.
The more than two years wait has made Vidya desperate, she has recently said: “I love MS Subbulakshmi, and I love the script that Rajiv has written… I wish it happens and happens soon. Everything is ready and they just need to get that thing out of the way and we can roll.”
