Telangana government today urged the centre to increase the number of Assembly seats from 119 to 153, as promised in the APRA (AP Reorganization Act). In a letter addressed to Rajiv Mehrishi, Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Chief Secretary of the state Rajiv Sharma said this is necessary in order to strengthen the democratic Institutions and to provide social justice to the people of Telangana. He reiterated the Centre to initiate action to place the matter before the Election Commission at the soonest.
In support of his request the Chief Secretary quoted the relevant provision under section 26 of AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 regarding delimitation of constituencies. AP too wanted the Centre to enhance the number of seats from 175 to 225.
Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has closeted with Home Ministry officials on the issue of delimitation and it is widely expected that the Centre may bring a Bill to this effect during the ensuing budget session of parliament.
