Paying tributes to Rohit Vemula, the dalit scholar who ended his life in January which led to country-wide protests, the Academic Council (AC) of University of Hyderabad has decided to activate the Equal Opportunities Cell and also appoint an Ombudsman for dealing with student-related issues.
The AC meeting was shifted from VC lodge to Life Science building due to security reasons, was chaired by Prof Appa Rao Podile, who is facing charges of plagiarism of late.
In a press release, it said:
Many important academic related issues were discussed in the meeting and important decisions were taken. The appointment of an Ombudsman, activating the Equal Opportunities Cell, and the appointment of an Anti-Discrimination Officer in line with relevant UGC Regulations of 2012 were discussed in detail and the AC decided to put in place a mechanism to redress relevant issues at the earliest.
Other important business at the AC meeting included finalization of entrance examination schedule for the admissions for academic year 2016-17. The notification for the admissions will be released at the earliest and online applications will be available from 11 April to 10 May 2016. It was also decided to reduce the application fee for OBC candidates.
