You must be thinking i’ve lost my mind to say this. But, be patient, read on and find out.
I know i am talking about a company with over a5 billion dollars worth, with over 120 crore registered users, and which will turn 10 coming February. These are not the statistics of a dying organization… but according to a recent “Global Social Media Impact Study”, the tide has already turned away from facebook. The study funded by the European Union, observed 16- to 18-year-olds in eight countries for 15 months and presented some assessment. It says, unlike when it was invented, facebook is not the favorite networking method for teens any more. In fact, in a strange turn of events, they are staying on to facebook only to stay in touch with the ‘older’ members of family and relatives. These older members of the family are just the same group which advised kids against facebook, saw the eventuality of its popularity and finally fell in line and started using it themselves.
Now the young users are turning to simpler services like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp, and now consider facebook ‘un cool’ to be associated with.
Researchers found that close friends were using Snapchat to communicate, while WhatsApp was used with acquaintances and Twitter broadcasted indiscriminately to anyone who chose to follow that person.
So, just about ten years and facebook is being relegated to the neanderthal thing to do? But you might say this study is more relevant to Europe and not India which has just started swearing by facebook. Suit yourself!
