Facebook has been secretly working on a new application, codenamed Slingshot, to take on video chat app Snapchat head on, revealed market sources. Zuckerberg, the Facebook chief himself is heard to be administering the growth and plans on the new app. the “Slingshot”, that would begin video chat with just a couple of button hits, may make a debut within this month! It may not be bundled with other Facebook apps and could be offered separately. Facebook earlier attempted to stem Snapchat’s growth with Poke, but the photo app failed, later to be dropped altogether.
Coupled with Facebook’s recent acquisition WhatsApp, if the Slingshot really succeeds, it could add to Facebook’s lead significantly.
Snapchat too, has been changing features, reworking quite constantly to keep itself in the loop, amidst rising competition from other messaging apps like WeChat, Kakao Talk etc. Detractors are saying that Facebook is a very late entrant into this segment and may not challenge current leaders.
