Farooq Sheikh, noted parallel cinema actor passes away

One of the quintessential common men brigade of the 70s, 80s parallel cinema, Farooq Sheikh passed away yesterday at Dubai due to a heart failure. He was 65. Coming from a Zamindari family, he associated himself with IPTA from his earliest days. he was introduced to the screen by MS Satyu in his 1973 classic “Garam Hawa”. Since then, Farooq was part of many parallel cinema projects till early 90s. he worked with notable directors like Satyajit Ray (Shatranj Ke Khiladi), Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Rang Birangi, Kissi Se Na Kehna, etc, ), Sai Parajpye (Chashme Baddoor, Katha etc), Muzaffar Ali (Gaman, Umrao Jaan), Ketan Mehta (Maya Memsaab), Yash Chopra (Noorie, Faasle).

He had won National Award as a best Supporting Actor for “Lahore” in 2009. HIs upcoming movie is “Club 60”. He was a regular part of the parallel cinema actors group along with Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Rakesh Bedi, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, Smita Patil, Kulbhushan Kharbanda etc,.

He played memorable roles on stage too in plays like “Tumhari Amrita”. He acted in TV serials and presented popular show “Jeena Issi Kaa Naam Hai” few years ago.
