A new technological project by an organization called Media Development Investment Fund, called as “Outernet” aims to provide free internet to all by the end of 2015. To be available even at the most remote places – deserts, valleys, sea and all other such places, the outernet, will depend on Cubesats to be specially deployed in space for the purpose, few hundreds of them, and through special antennas placed on the earth to receive the signals.
The initial speeds will be low, but available to all for free, the organization says. This is not being devised as a replacement to the existing Internet, but as a support network to it, focusing on areas where internet is not reaching. They are calling this Outernet “Information for the World from Outer space.”
The company is comparing this new technology to short wave or torrent technology from space.
