“Grace of Monaco”, is the story of Hollywood star Grace Kelly who married Prince of Monaco Rainier III, her retirement from the movies and her efforts to adjust to the demands of royal life during the most troublesome years of Monaco’s existence.
Nicole Kidman starred in the title role, along with Tim Roth, Paz Vega and others, directed by Olivier Dahan. The film marks the first hollywood foray of Indian film production house Yashraj Films. YRF collaborated with Weinstein Company and others on this film. The film had been embroiled in controversies over the final editing between the producers and the director. The producers later settled for the directors version. BUt then the current Monaco royal family, Kelly’s daughter and son refused the film saying it is an inaccurate version of Kelly’s life. They have refused to even see the movie.
The film was chosen to open the Cannes. But the film failed to impress the audience and critics. Many reviews mentioned the film as a “stiff, stagey, drama less affair.”
The festival jury this time is headed by filmmaker Jane Campion. This round of the festival is more represented by the Europe, Canada and other region films, compared to Hollywood. Jean-Luc Godard, Ken Loach, Mike Leigh and Michel Hazanavicius are presenting their work.
