Known for his no nonsense talk, Union Minister and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has voiced opinions on some serious issues of the country. In an interview for CNN IBN’s ‘Devil’s Advocate’ by Karan Thapar, Ramesh said that “…the ’84 anti sikh riots are a blot on all of us, it is a blot on Congress, it is a blot on the nation…”. Speaking about the demand of apology from Rahul Gandhi on the issue, he reminded that the PM has apologized, Sonia Gandhi too apologized. IN his opinion, he said that “There is much to be said for an apology, there is much to be said for ensuring the justice is meted out to the people who are victims of 1984 riots in terms of compensation… in terms of bringing the guilty to book…”. The fact that Congress has been fighting, winning and losing elections in Punjab is a pointer to the fact that Congress has been forgiven by the Sikh people, he analysed.
Speaking on another controversial issue, the Gujarat riots, Ramesh felt that they are of a different nature in comparison with 84 riots. “2002 riots were born out of underlying 60-year ideology of hatred and demonization,” he stated.
About the ongoing tussle related to Telangana, he said that the Congress does not wish to push the bill through in any hurry, there is a need for detailed discussion on this contentious issue, he opined.
