In an unusual judgement, the Hyderabad High Court has ordered recovery of salary and perks that were paid to former minister and MLA Mr Satrucharla Vijayarama Raju. Mr Raju was MLA from 1999 to 2004, representing from Parvathipuram constituency in Vijayanagaram district of the then United Andhra Pradesh. Parvathipuram was reserved for STs and Mr Raju contested and won on ST category.
But his caste roots were challenged later by his political opponent Mr Nimmaka Jayaraj and the High Court ruled he did not belong to Scheduled Tribes and that his caste certificates and documents were fake. The court ruled that Mr Raju was a Kshatriya, which comes under forward community and not a ‘konda raju’ which comes under ST. Mr Vijaya Rama Raju challenged the verdict of HC in Supreme Court which has also concurred with the trial court’s view and dismissed his plea.
Mr Raju later moved to Pathapatnam in Srikakulam district and went to become minister for forests in YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s cabinet
But the High Court, taking cognizance of the case, the High Court has ordered recovery of the benefits he enjoyed viz salary, perks etc during the period of 1999-2004. Never did the High Court give such an extra-ordinary ruling of recovering the benefits of an MLA in the past.
