Tension continues to prevail in the University of Hyderabad after the Vice Chancellor Prof Podile Appa Rao rejoined today. After widespread destruction at the EC meeting in the morning, the rampaging students regrouped at the residence of VC and held protest. they even resorted to stone pelting and destruction which forced the police to intervene and dispersed the mob after a mild lathi-charge. Additional forces have rushed inside the HCU to control the students as the situation slipped out of hand. The police who faced the wrath of the students for intervention, have been trying to evict some of the students and lifting some people out of the premises.
The Vice Chancellor who left the varsity after Rohit Vemula’s death, has expressed readiness to hold talks with student groups but made it clear he is not going to quit on the demands of some splinter groups. I am the VC and I am here to stay, he said emphatically.
Even the university staff members- both teaching and non-teaching have expressed solidarity with the VC. they threatened to stop work at hostels and stop supply of water too.
