In a key judgement that is going to have a lasting impact on Indian and especially the Hindu society, the apex court has observed that “ a Hindu is a Hindu” and that Hinduism does not discriminate between male and female devotees.
The court has heard arguments on a plea on the ban on women entering Kerala’s famous Sabarimala temple. “The ban is a decision of temple Board and cannot be attributed to Hinduism. The customs are not above the Constitution of the land and basic Constitutional rights cannot be infringed. Women cannot be denied a chance to have a darshan from the sanctum sanctorum. Anyone can worship god, he is omnipresent,” the court had said, adding that such temple rules were unacceptable.
