Historian, an authority on Indian independence, Bipan Chandra dies

Bipan-Chandra-diesIn a very sad news of demise, one of the most prominent scholars of the nation and an authority on the movement of independence, Bipan Chandra died today in his sleep, informed his family. He was 86.

It is reported by the family members that he died around 6 in the morning today at his residence in Gurgaon. He was carrying issues with his health since few months. The family said that his cremation ceremony will be held later in the day.

Bipan Chandra’s had contributed many books on history and his work is prescribed as a standard history text in Indian schools.

Mr Chandra was born in 1928 in Himachal Pradesh. He studied at the Forman Christian College, Lahore and then at Stanford University, United States while He did his PhD thesis from University of Delhi.

He was the member of University Grants Commission in 1993.
