rio_newMinister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal has said that the Department of Sports signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (IIFCL) in March 2015.  The IIFCL will contribute Rs.30 crore to the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) for the Target Olympic Podium scheme for Corporate Social Responsibility. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today Sonowal said the TOP Scheme has been formulated with an objective to identify and support potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympics. The IIFCL has contributed Rs.10 crore to fund badminton.


He said 45 sportspersons in athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, wrestling and sailing have been identified/selected for training under the guidance of reputed coaches. There was a representation from Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa for their inclusion in the scheme. Rs 96.80 lakhs has been released so far, the minister said.
