April 2 is World Autism Day. ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder is a genetic condition that refers to problems in brain development. Children found to be having ASD have trouble communicating, display repetitive behaviours and show little interest in activities. And the intensity of the disorder varies from individual to individual. These days, more cases of Autism are being reported and it is because of the raising awareness.
Unfortunately there is no cure for this disorder; however, with early detection the disorder can be managed. Specialists have devised various intervention programmes and therapies that help in the overall development of the affected and in improving the quality of life. The key is early detection and intervention. Children who are affected by the disorder show the signs as early as 12-24 months.
Here are the signs to look out for

• He does not smile
• He experiences trouble in making meaningful gestures even by 1 year
• He does not respond to their name
• He begins to develop language, but loses it and the chances are that he acquire language at all
