Hyderabad Abhaya case culprits handed 20 years sentence by RR court

The Ranga Reddy District Court has delivered a “Guilty Verdict” against the two culprits in the Software employee rape case, generally referred to as the Abhaya case of Hyderabad. The sentence is 20 years sever imprisonment to both besides a 1000 Rs fine as well. The culprits were declared guilty under IPC 342, 356, and 376 D. This is the first case registered under the Nirbhaya Act after it was promulgated. The victim is a Bangalore native software Engineer, working at a company in Gachibowli. On the 18th of October last year, around 8 in the evening, she was waiting for a ride to her hostel in Gowli Doddi. A cab driver Satish, his friend Venkateshwarlu picked her up on the pretext of dropping her, took her past Lingampalli, and raped her in a deserted area. The CCTV footage from Inorbit Mall, and Birla Open Minds school have established the movements of the victim and the culprits.

The culprits have been lodged in the Cherlapalli jail since arrest. 21 witnesses were questioned, including one video statement of a witness who is currently in the US. The case was registered under the recently incorporated Nirbhaya act meant for womens’ safety.
