Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has informed Assembly that he directed the police not to arrest JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar during his recent visit to the city. “I summoned both the commissioners and the DGP and specifically told them not to arrest Kanhaiya. This is a democratic country and he should be allowed to go free anywhere he plans and participates in any function he likes. Even at the HCU, it was the university security staff who prevented him at the entrance gate and not the city police. The security staff too don khaki dress, everyone thought it was state police who stopped him.Since law and order come in the state government purview, we need to provide him the necessary security outside” Mr Rao revealed. He maintained that police did not intervene when Kanhaiya participated in an event at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram.
The chief minister said he does not actually know that the mess was closed down and power supply was stopped in the university. I will ask a senior officer to enquire into all issues, he added.
“It is not a question whether Rohit is a dalit or not. In fact, everyone shall strive hard to end discrimination. It is quite unfortunate that the life of a bright student has ended abruptly” he said.
