ICRISAT Launches Tablet To Make Farming Tech Savvy

ICRISATThe Hyderabad based International Crop Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics has developed a tablet called GreenPhablet, which will help farming more productive with the help of modern technology.

The green tablet is powered by GreenSIM. With the use of this tablet, the farmers would be directly linked to the research station. Through the tablet the farmers would be able to get instant updates about weather conditions, problems due to pest, prevailing market rates for their produce and the best agricultural practices to be followed.

With the tablet, farmers will be getting direct updates, which will make the input cost lower and increase the selling costs of the produce, making the farmers more prosperous.

Even though the tablet is designed for small farm holdings, the rate of the tablet looks quite high at INR 18919.

But according to Mr. William Dar, the Director General of the research institute, “This will help farmers purchase inputs at lower price, get a better price for their produce, and link them to markets, thus putting them on the path to prosperity.”

The trial run of the tablet was conducted in the three southern states of Andhra, Telangana and Karnataka, with 40, 000 subscribers. The positive response obtained has steered the scientist in launching the tablet, in the open market.
