Inavolu Mallanna Jathara

komurellij ataraThe Inavolu Mallanna jathara continues on a grand scale. This jathara which begins on the day of Sankranti continues till Ugadi. The oracles of the possessed Saivaites and the dances of Oggu artists are a special attraction of the jathara. The devotees with bonam on their head, hunter in hand and jingling anklets to feet go round the temple with great devotion. The tradition of men donning women’s robes and presenting offerings to the Goddess continue. Many childless couples tie coconut in red cloth and offer it to the presiding deity Mallanna for progeny. Dog fights are conducted in the jathara as part of tradition. It being the biggest Saivaite tribal jathara in the district, the government made elaborate arrangement for the devotees.
