The no. of hit-and-run cases in the city and outskirts are a haunt to the travelers. About 10 such cases are reported every month in Hyderabad and 16 cases in Cyberabad. Most of the hit-and-run accidents are occurred during the night-time.
In 2014, 81 cases of hit-and-run have been registered in Hyderabad till August, while 158 such accidents happened in the Cyberabad limits till October.
Apart from the injuries and deaths, the victims have to bear the pain at the insurance offices too as the companies deny the compensation since the accused vehicles are not known.
A senior lawyer in High Court says, “The insurance company usually recovers money from the accused vehicle owner when the compensation decided by the court is higher than the liability. In hit-and-run cases, there are no chances of recovering money from the accused. Most claims are denied outright”.
Section 161 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a lesser known scheme exists however. The injured person in the hit-and-run case gets a financial help of Rs. 12,500 while the family of the deceased gets a help of Rs. 25,000 from the government.
