Polling for 41 seats: 18 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 17 seats in West Bengal, six in Bihar are polling today in the last – 9th phase of 16th Lok Sabha elections. About 9 crore voters will exercise their franchisee today. Varanasi is the most watched constituency today, with Narendra Modi, Arvind Kejriwal and Ajay Rai contesting there.
Other major candidates contesting today are Sudip Bandopadhyay, Sougata Roy, Tapas Paul, Abhishek Banerjee, Subhashini Ali, PC Sorkar, Asim Das Gupta, Tapan Sikdar, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Jagadambika Paul, Kalraj Mishra, Ravi Kishan, Neeraj Shekhar, and others.
Of the 17 seats in West Bengal, 14 were held by TMC in the 2009 elections, CPI, SUCI and Congress had won one seat each. In the 18 UP seats, Samajwadi held six seats, BSP 5, BJP 4, COngress had won 3 seats in the last elections. In the six seats of Bihar, BJP, JD(U) held two each, RJD had one, an independent candidate took one seat.
Today marks the end of elections for total 543 seats of the Lok Sabha. The exit polls are allowed to be telecast by the election Commission after 6.30 pm, half hour after polling ends across the country. Exit polls for Andhra, Telangana region are banned till tomorrow evening as repoll in about thirty stations will be held tomorrow.
